Light reflected off non-metallic surfaces is polarized. Polarized lenses can block reflected light (ie glare.) Polarized lenses cut glare from glass, snow, the road, and the surface of water. This makes them great in the summer since so much of the light entering your eyes is reflected light. Polarized lenses are great for fishing or boating since they allow you to see the fish or rocks under the water's surface. They are great for driving because they cut the glare reflected from other cars and make it easier to see through your own windshield.

Glare can be 7 to 10 times brighter than normal light. Glare can result in squinting, tired eyes and headaches. Polarized lenses can minimize and even eliminate the effects of glare versus non-polarized sunglasses.

You will notice most polarized sunglasses are not as darkly tinted as non-polarized sunglasses; which use dark lenses to try to reduce the effects of glare. A darker lens in non-polarized sunglasses will darken your entire vision; polarized lenses allow more of the "good" light to get through.
